The Steam Summer Sale Ends Tomorrow: Here are 10 Games Under $5 to Grab Before it Does
It’s been a great two weeks of the Steam Summer Sale, but the festivities come to a close tomorrow, July 10, at 10 am Pacific Standard Time. That means there’s a little less than 24 hours left to grab any of the current ongoing deals before they’re gone. If you’re anything like me, you’ve waited until the 11th hour to scour through all the deals and pick up some essentials before the event is over, and perusing through the “Under $10” and “Under $5” sections on the Steam Store page show that there are a staggering number of incredible games at unbelievable discounts. The following 10 titles are ones that, should you not already have them in your library, you need to grab ASAP before the Summer Sale ends.
Star Wars Battlefront II
- Release Date — November 16, 2017
- Developer — DICE
- Publisher — Electronic Arts
- Genre — FPS
- Steam User Score — 87% (Very Positive)
- Price — $3.99 (Normally $39.99, 90% off)
Star Wars Battlefront II started off as one of the more despised games of the modern era, thanks to all its pay-to-win lootbox nonsense, but has since experienced almost a complete 180. A recent dip down to just $4 saw plenty of new players jump in, bringing its ailing community back to life just in time for the discount to carry through to the Steam Summer Sale. Today, Star Wars Battlefront II is a fun game in either single or multiplayer and contains all the previously premium pay-to-win content for free, and it’s definitely worth grabbing while it’s still on its 90% discount.
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
- Release Date — June 29, 2018
- Developer — Vicarious Visions, Iron Galaxy
- Publisher — Activision
- Genre — Platformer
- Steam User Score — 92% (Very Positive)
- Price — $3.99 (Normally $39.99, 90% off)
The Crash Bandicoot games were some of the most important platformers on the original PlayStation, and Vicarious Visions and Iron Galaxy’s modern remake of those beloved games does a great job recapturing their magic with some uplifted visuals. The first three Crash Bandicoot games still hold up incredibly well when stacked up against other modern platformers, and being able to get the entire remake trilogy for just $4 is an absolute steal. While you’re at it, go ahead and get Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time for half off before the sale ends.
Borderlands 3
- Release Date — March 13, 2020
- Developer — Gearbox Software
- Publisher — 2K
- Genre — FPS, Looter Shooter
- Steam User Score — 81% (Very Positive)
- Price — $2.99 (Normally $59.99, 95% off)
The release of Borderlands 4 is just around the corner, which means every single preceding game in the Borderlands franchise is currently on a deep discount as part of the Steam Summer Sale. Borderlands 3 is currently back down to its historically low price of just $3, which feels very reasonable considering how much content is on offer in just the base game. If you can look past the abysmal writing and annoying characters, Borderlands 3 has some rock-solid looter shooter gameplay.
RoboCop: Rogue City
- Release Date — November 2, 2023
- Developer — Teyon
- Publisher — Nacon
- Genre — FPS
- Steam User Score — 86% (Very Positive)
- Price — $4.99 (Normally $49.99, 90% off)
Probably one of the most underrated games of the last few years, Teyon’s RoboCop: Rogue City is another of the titles you can currently grab for less than $5 as part of the Steam Summer Sale. If you haven’t played it yet and have even a passing interest in first-person shooters and the RoboCop films, you absolutely owe it to yourself to play Rogue City. This game does a better job of continuing the story of the first two films than RoboCop 3 ever did, and it even has a DLC expansion dropping next week.
Fallout: New Vegas
- Release Date — October 19, 2010
- Developer — Obsidian Entertainment
- Publisher — Bethesda Softworks
- Genre — Action RPG
- Steam User Score — 96% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
- Price — $4.99 (Normally $9.99, 50% off)
Recent rumors seem to point to Bethesda giving Fallout 3 the same treatment that it just gave to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which makes now the perfect time to grab Fallout: New Vegas if you haven’t yet. Fallout: New Vegas is a little bit truer to the spirit and atmosphere of the first two Fallout games than Fallout 3 is, and the crazy amount of freedom it affords players in terms of how they approach their playthrough has cemented it as one of the most beloved games in the entire series, modern or otherwise.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
- Release Date — October 21, 2016
- Developer — Firaxis Games
- Publisher — 2K
- Genre — Strategy, 4X
- Steam User Score — 85% (Very Positive)
- Price — $2.99 (Normally $59.99, 95% off)
You could grab Civilization VII and ride out the updates and patches necessary to bring it up to a more agreeable state, or you could just grab the already excellent Civilization VI and have hundreds of hours of peak 4X gameplay to keep you busy until Civitilzation VII eventually goes on sale. For my money, Civilization VI is the best the series has been, and it benefits from having 9 years under its belt of patches, balance tweaks, and updates. If you jump in now, you’re getting the best version of one of the best strategy games around.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
- Release Date — October 15, 2019
- Developer — ZA/UM
- Publisher — ZA/UM
- Genre — RPG
- Steam User Score — 93% (Very Positive)
- Price — $3.99 (Normally $39.99, 90% off)
For just its writing alone, Disco Elysium would have a strong claim to being one of the best RPGs ever made. But its brilliance goes far beyond just a great script, with Disco Elysium‘s commitment to robust RPG systems and player agency helping to keep it engaging, even without a single shred of combat in the entire experience. Disco Elysium regularly goes on sale for 50% off, but it’s currently down to a record 90% off price of just $4, making it an essential pick up for anyone who has yet to play it.
Black Mesa
- Release Date — March 6, 2020
- Developer — Crowbar Collective
- Publisher — Crowbar Collective
- Genre — FPS
- Steam User Score — 95% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
- Price — $1.99 (Normally $19.99, 90% off)
Video game remakes aren’t really anything new these days, but back in 2020, the idea of an independent studio receiving Valve’s blessing to remake the original Half-Life was practically unheard of. That game is Black Mesa, and it’s an essential reimagining of one of the most important PC games of all time that deserves to be in every FPS fan’s game library, either on sale or at full price. Black Mesa is normally just $20, but its current price of just $2 only serves to sweeten what’s already a great deal.
Dying Light
- Release Date — January 26, 2015
- Developer — Techland
- Publisher — Techland
- Genre — Survival Horror, Action, Open-World
- Steam User Score — 95% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
- Price — $4.99 (Normally $24.99, 80% off)
We’re not far off from the release of the next game in the Dying Light saga, The Beast, which makes now the perfect time to jump into the franchise if you haven’t yet. Dying Light 2 is great (and also on sale), but the first game in the series is still something special that has yet to be topped. It’s currently just $5 and some of the most fun you could possibly have for that amount of money.
Dishonored
- Release Date — October 9, 2012
- Developer — Arkane Studios
- Publisher — Bethesda Softworks
- Genre — FPS, Immersive Sim, Stealth
- Steam User Score — 97% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
- Price — $2.49 (Normally $9.99, 75% off)
If you’ve somehow gone the last 13 years without playing Arkane’s Dishonored, then please, for goodness’ sake, go pick it up right now on Steam while it’s just $2.49. Dishonored is the spiritual successor to games like Deus Ex and Thief, having more immersive sim DNA than the similarly-minded BioShock and a greater emphasis on both stealth and player choice. The first game in the series came out just ahead of the release of BioShock Infinite, and it was so good that it practically stole that game’s thunder.
