The Most Anticipated RPGs Coming in 2025

The Most Anticipated RPGs Coming in 2025

The front half of 2025 was already stacked with some incredible RPGs, from breakout Game of the Year contenders like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to some incredibly solid remasters of beloved classics like Tales of Graces f and Suikoden I and II. But the year is only half over, which means role-playing game fans have plenty more to look forward to over the next six months, starting with a small handful of releases for the rest of July and then culminating in a “September to remember” that features two of the genre’s most anticipated drops for the year — one a full-blown remake of a newer classic and the other one of the most highly requested remasters of any RPG ever made. There are still plenty of great RPGs coming in the remainder of 2025, and these are the 10 to keep an eye out for.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition

  • Release Date — July 15, 2025
  • Developer — Aspyr
  • Publisher — Aspyr
  • Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S

Just next week, we’ve got an exciting remaster approaching that many players thought would never happen. While there are plenty who love the original Neverwinter Nights, its equally great sequel gets far less appreciation for some reason, which makes the fast-approaching Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition such a pleasant surprise. Considering the rise in popularity of the CRPG subgenre over the last few years (largely thanks to big hits like Disco Elysium and Baldur’s Gate 3), Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition‘s arrival couldn’t have been more perfectly timed.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

  • Release Date — July 24, 2025
  • Developer — Leenzee Games
  • Publisher — 505 Games
  • Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

As if we didn’t already have enough Soulslikes, Leenzee Games’ Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is yet another title to throw on the genre pile, arriving in just two weeks on July 24. Though it does bring some new ideas to the table. The most obvious difference between Wuchang and other action RPGs of its ilk is its setting and visual style, which takes place in Ming Dynasty-era China and features a strong mix of both natural and supernatural foes. Other than Black Myth: Wukong, we don’t have too many action RPG/Soulslike games that dabble in Chinese mythology, so hopefully Wuchang has the mechanics and combat chops to back up its strong visual identity.

Off

  • Release Date — August 15, 2025
  • Developer — Mortis Ghost, Fangamer
  • Publisher — Fangamer
  • Platforms — PC

When players hear the phrase “beloved indie RPG”, the first name that probably pops into their heads is Undertale. But another game perfectly fits that bill and predates Toby Fox’s critically acclaimed modern masterpiece by nearly a decade. Off is the creation of developers Martin Georis (Mortis Ghost) and Alias Conrad Coldwood, and it’s finally coming to both Steam and Nintendo Switch this August after years of being available exclusively from online forums. For anyone who has even the most remote fondness for quirky, offbeat RPGs like Earthbound, Off is a must-play that will leave an indelible impression on you.

Dying Light: The Beast

  • Release Date — August 22, 2025
  • Developer — Techland
  • Publisher — Techland
  • Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Considering their heavy emphasis on parkour and first-person combat, it can be easy to forget that Techland’s Dying Light games are absolutely action RPGs. The latest game in the franchise sees players return to controlling the first game’s protagonist, Kyle Crane, as he once again takes to the streets and rooftops of an isolated town infested with zombies. If Dying Light: The Beast is anything like its two predecessors in the franchise, players are in store for a whole host of surprising RPG-style progression and mechanics, including branching skill trees, experience collected from platforming and combat challenges, and enough weapon customization to make the most creative zombie-slayers happy.

Lost Soul Aside

  • Release Date — August 29, 2025
  • Developer — Ultizero Games
  • Publisher — Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5

After a last-minute delay causing the title to miss its original April release date, Ultizero Games’ Lost Soul Aside is now releasing at the end of August. The reveal trailers for Lost Soul Aside seemed to indicate that it would have some heavy Soulslike inspiration, but everything that’s been shown about the game since suggests that it’s actually closer to a JRPG with some action-heavy combat a la Final Fantasy XVI. With Sony backing it up as a first-party title, Lost Soul Aside could be one of the summer’s dark horse titles and a contender for one of the year’s best action RPGs.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

  • Release Date — September 19, 2025
  • Developer — Nihon Falcom
  • Publisher — Nihon Falcom, Gung Ho Online
  • Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch

The first game in the Trails lineage of the Legend of Heroes series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, is an amazing JRPG that often gets overlooked in favor of other, bigger franchises. Players finally have a great reason to dive into the (admittedly) intimidating Legend of Heroes series with Trails in the Sky‘s remake, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, when it launches this September. This is a ground-up remake of the first game in the Trails series that features visuals closer to the modern entries made using Nihon Falcom’s new proprietary game engine, and it looks stunning. Even as someone who’s more than a dozen games deep into the Trails series, I can’t wait to play Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter and go back to the beginning of the interconnected saga.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

  • Release Date — September 30, 2025
  • Developer — Square Enix
  • Publisher — Square Enix
  • Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S

Another remake/remaster coming in September that RPG fans should be excited about is Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the all-time greatest games in Square Enix’s back catalog and an undisputed PS1 classic, but it’s been trapped on dead hardware for almost 20 years. The Ivalice Chronicles brings the beloved TRPG to PC and modern consoles while also updating its visuals, script, and adding in some quality of life flourishes, complete with it including the full original version of the game for any purists. Having Final Fantasy Tactics on the go on a Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch is practically a dream come true.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger

  • Release Date — October 3, 2025
  • Developer — Media.Vision
  • Publisher — Bandai Namco
  • Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

Without even knowing a single thing about the Digimon franchise (and having only just gotten into creature-collecting RPGs like Pokémon a few years ago), I’m still excited for Digimon Story: Time Stranger based solely on its incredible reveal trailer. Media.Vision seems to be taking a similar approach to this latest Digimon game as Game Freak has with the Pokémon Legends spin-offs, and it’s following up one of the fanbase’s favorite games in the franchise — Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

  • Release Date — October 16, 2025
  • Developer — Game Freak
  • Publisher — Nintendo
  • Platforms — Nintendo Switch, Switch 2

Just two weeks after the launch of Digimon Story: Time Stranger, the latest Pokémon game drops on October 16 with Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The Pokémon franchise is known for being a little too comfortable resting on its laurels (and the strength of the IP), but Pokémon Legends: Arceus was a phenomenal game that did a great job of shaking up the series’ aging formula. With any luck, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will do the same, and it’s sure to be a major success for Nintendo regardless.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake

  • Release Date — October 30, 2025
  • Developer — Artdink, Square Enix
  • Publisher — Square Enix
  • Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S

One of the year’s most exciting RPG releases happens to be yet another remake, but given how well Artdink pulled off last year’s Dragon Quest III remake, it’s one to be excited about. Following the awesome Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake that tells the chronologically first story in the Erdrick trilogy, we’re now getting HD-2D remakes of the first two Dragon Quest games to conclude the storyline of the Erdrick line, and old-school JRPG fans should be very excited about this one. Personally, the first Dragon Quest is still one of my all-time favorite games in the genre, so I can’t wait to play the HD-2D remake.

Demonschool

  • Release Date — Q3 2025
  • Developer — Necrosoft Games
  • Publisher — Ysbryd Games
  • Platforms — PC

Necrosoft Games’ Demonschool continues to be one of my most anticipated RPGs ever since I initially played the demo last year. Originally, Demonschool was supposed to release in 2024, but it would go on to suffer a few delays, pushing it to a tentative “Q3 2025” release date. Imagine Persona meets Silent Hill meets Final Fantasy Tactics, and you’re getting pretty close to what Demonschool has going on. That it so perfectly nails that eclectic mix of inspirations and game genres is precisely what makes it a game to watch.

Shadow of the Road

  • Release Date — TBA
  • Developer — Another Angle Games
  • Publisher — Owlcat Games
  • Platforms — PC

We don’t have an official release date for Shadow of the Road other than a vague “TBA”, but the early alpha playtest was so good that it immediately shot to the top of my wishlist as one of my more anticipated CRPG/TRPG titles. Shadow of the Road is a combat-focused TRPG with some CRPG elements like dialogue choices, exploration, and skill checks, but its combat will feel right at home to anyone who’s played and loved Firaxis’ XCOM games. It’s being published by Owlcat Games (which is a great sign for the title’s post-launch support), and I can’t speak highly enough of how excellent its samurai-themed combat and supernatural bend are.
