The Best FPS Games Blasting Their Way Onto Switch 2
It’s been just two months since the global launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th, 2025, and already, the Switch 2 is shaping up to be a phenomenal successor to the original Nintendo Switch. One of its strongest selling points is its backward compatibility, allowing you to access most of the excellent Nintendo Switch library, including being able to play games with better resolution and framerates courtesy of both free and premium Switch 2 upgrades.
With the increased power of the Nintendo Switch 2, it appears that Nintendo is attempting to provide a broader range of games on its portable console. First-person shooters are some of the most celebrated video games in the medium, and it just so happens that modern FPS titles usually require a lot of processing power and hard drive space to enjoy. Thanks to the power boost of the Switch 2 and the Switch 2 Joy Con’s mouse functionality, Nintendo’s newest console is now primed and ready to have an even better FPS library than its predecessor.
Apex Legends
- Release Date — August 5, 2025
- Developer — Respawn Entertainment
- Publisher — Electronic Arts
- Review Aggregate Score — 89% (Generally Favorable)
Apex Legends took the world by storm when it originally released back in 2019. The title is an online battle royale where players create squads of three from a large cast of characters known as Legends. The game is similar to other Hero Shooters in that regard. Apex Legends is free to play, making it an excellent choice for those who want to try it before committing a significant amount of time.
Each match will usually be a free-for-all between twenty teams of three-player squads. Players scavenge for weapons and defensive items while trying to survive to be the last one standing. If knocked down, they can be revived by their teammates, but if everyone goes down at once, it is game over. It should be noted that the game isn’t playable offline, so if that’s something important to you, then maybe you could skip this one.
Borderlands 4
- Release Date — October 3, 2025
- Developer — Gearbox Software
- Publisher — 2K
The newest entry in the popular Borderlands franchise will be released to the masses on October 3, 2025. Similar to the games that came before it, Borderlands 4 will be a first-person looter shooter with a few RPG elements sprinkled on top. Everything a fan can expect from the series will be present, such as humor, tight gunplay, and an immersive world. The other Borderlands games have been a great fit on Switch thanks to the system’s portability, and Borderlands 4 is likely to fill a similar niche on the Switch 2.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition
- Release Date — June 5, 2025
- Developer — CD Projekt Red
- Publisher — CD Projekt
- Review Aggregate Score — 85% (Generally Favorable)
Cyberpunk 2077 is easily one of the best games of the last decade. Although it had a rough launch initially, the game has only improved with the support of its fans and developers. Alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, an Ultimate Edition was released, bringing this phenomenal first-person shooter/RPG to a brand-new audience. The title accurately reflects the power of the Switch 2, and it’s also an all-around pleasant experience. Cyberpunk 2077‘s narrative, gameplay, and immersive world make it another must-have shooter if you own the Nintendo Switch 2.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
- Release Date — 2025
- Developer — Retro Studios
- Publisher — Nintendo
Metroid Prime 4 is expected to be the sleeper hit of the Nintendo Switch 2’s first year. For those looking for a first-person shooter that takes place in a more futuristic, alien, sci-fi setting, they should keep their eyes peeled for the release of this title. The Metroid Prime franchise is one of Nintendo’s more niche IPs, but the Metroid games are just as good as any other game on this list and deserve their fair shake. Players looking to get lost on a foreign planet and have to make use of their wits to fight bosses, solve puzzles, and eventually escape a hostile world look no further than Metroid Prime 4 when it releases.
No Man’s Sky
- Release Date — October 7, 2022
- Developer — Hello Games
- Publisher — Hello Games
- Review Aggregate Score — 91% (Universal Acclaim)
Similar to Cyberpunk 2077, No Man’s Sky is another story of redemption. Initially, the title was not released in the best state; however, through the tenacity of Hello Games, the game is in an incredible state. The turnaround was so great that many even believe that Nintendo Switch 2 might be the best place to play the first-person action survival game. While No Man’s Sky might not be what you’d expect from a traditional first-person shooter, it is an experience that’ll stay with you for years to come. One of the main draws of the title is that nearly all of it is generated procedurally. It is an explorer’s dream game and has to be seen to be believed.
