Everything Announced at the September 12 Nintendo Direct
Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation was packed with so many announcements that it almost made you forget that September 12 wasn’t actually the official anniversary of Super Mario Bros.. All jokes aside, Super Mario Bros. celebrates its 40th anniversary tomorrow, September 13, and it predictably took up the front half of the Direct presentation with a slew of announcements pertaining to the anniversary celebrations Nintendo is hosting around the globe, as well as some incredibly exciting game and other media announcements. But as soon as the Mario block was over, Nintendo kicked things into full gear with one of the best Nintendo Direct showcases the company has had since the official reveal of the Switch 2 and its launch lineup earlier this year.
Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary Celebrations
Things kicked off with a slew of announcements regarding the different ways that Nintendo plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. The new Nintendo Museum in Japan will have a special exhibit with several drawings and design documents from the planning stages and development of games in the Super Mario series, from the original Super Mario Bros. through Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Additionally, visitors will get special tickets for the event featuring the official Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary artwork above. Nintendo is also planning the other celebrations in conjunction with Mario’s big birthday:
- A special holiday light show at the Nintendo Museum in December
- Special events at the Super Nintendo World theme parks at Universal Tokyo, Hollywood, and Orlando
- A 40th anniversary celebration and Nintendo sponsorship for the 2026 Kyoto Marathon
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The big feather in the cap for Mario’s 40th anniversary is the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Nintendo and Illumination once again partnering on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The principal voice cast from the original is back for the sequel, and Shigeru Miyamoto and producer Chris Meledandri note that viewers can expect plenty of special Easter Eggs and fan service referencing games from across the entire history of Super Mario Bros.

Another release from earlier this year that’s making its way to Nintendo Switch is Popucom. We got to see some more of the previously announced Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and it continues to look like it’ll be a must-have for Switch-owning fans of social sim games. FuzzyBot’s Lynked: Banner of the Spark is a curious blend of action RPG and survival/crafting that’s enjoyed a positive reception on Steam, and it shadow-dropped onto Switch 2 during today’s Nintendo Direct. - Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Intelligent Systems

The final announcement of the Nintendo Direct showcase was a big one, with the Switch 2 getting a console-exclusive new entry in the Fire Emblem series. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave looks similar to Three Houses in terms of its visual style and combat visuals, but its scope and story seem much more dialed back and akin to classic Fire Emblem than the social sim-centric Three Houses.
