The Best Games to Grab During the PlayStation Store Planet of the Discounts Sale
Hot on the heels of the recent Player’s Choice Sale (which also happened to have some incredible deals on great PS4 and PS5 games), the PlayStation Store has once again kicked off another major sales event with the 2025 edition of the annual Planet of the Discounts Sale. One of the major highlights in this particular iteration of the Planet of the Discounts Sale is the large number of Call of Duty games that are heavily discounted from their normal MSRP, with almost the entire franchise (and one very special entry in particular, mentioned in this list) marked down. Of course, there are plenty of great PS4 and PS5 games to grab that run the gamut of genres and recency, with the following 15 titles the ones that we’d recommend picking up before Planet of the Discounts ends on November 5.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
- Release Date — October 26, 2021
- Developer — Eidos Montreal
- Publisher — Square Enix
- Genre — Action-Adventure
- Review Aggregate Score — 80% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $8.99 (Normally $59.99, 85% off)
The Eidos Montreal Guardians of the Galaxy game isn’t just the best Marvel video game that almost nobody played; it’s also one of the best renditions of these iconic superheroes and rivals the James Gunn films in terms of how enjoyable and well-written it is. That there’s a surprisingly great third-person shooter/action-adventure game underneath Guardians‘ excellent storytelling is just the icing on the cake. Despite considerable critical praise and plenty of word-of-mouth hype from players, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy went woefully underplayed for how great an experience it is, but you can easily rectify that now thanks to its $9 sale price. You won’t be disappointed.
Final Fantasy VII
- Release Date — December 5, 2015
- Developer — Square Enix, Dotemu
- Publisher — Square Enix
- Genre — JRPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 92% (Universal Acclaim)
- Price — $6.39 (Normally $15.99, 60% off)
All these years later, Final Fantasy VII is still just as incredible an RPG as it was back in 1997, and its PC version has long been the definitive way to play Square’s iconic classic. Back in 2015, Square partnered with Dotemu to bring that PC version to modern hardware (then, the PS4), and that remastered version is now available for less than $7 as part of the Planet of the Discounts Sale. While Final Fantasy VII on PS4 lacks a lot of the flexibility and customization of the PC version (sadly, no mod support), it’s still a solid “definitive” way to play one of the most important RPGs ever made, and a perfect companion game to keep you busy until the upcoming third entry in Square Enix’s ambitious remake trilogy.
Contra: Operation Galuga
- Release Date — March 12, 2024
- Developer — WayForward
- Publisher — Konami
- Genre — Action, Shooter, Run ‘n Gun
- Review Aggregate Score — 70% (Mixed or Average)
- Price — $19.99 (Normally $39.99, 50% off)
Never mind the lower review aggregate scores for this one — Contra games (and, really, run ‘n gun games, in general) aren’t known for being critical darlings, but man are they an absolute blast for those of us who grew up on the franchise. Contra: Operation Galuga is no different, and it also happens to be one of the best Contra games since Contra 4 on the DS; fitting, considering they were both developed by WayForward. There’s a ton of great content in Contra: Operation Galuga, and its modern-day reimagining of the NES original is a nostalgic blast from the past that expands the game’s stages and lore in some interesting ways. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s worth the normal $40 asking price, but the current 50% off deal makes it a no-brainer.
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin
- Release Date — March 18, 2022
- Developer — Team Ninja
- Publisher — Square Enix
- Genre — Action RPG, Souslike
- Review Aggregate Score — 72% (Mixed or Average)
- Price — $15.99 (Normally $39.99, 60% off)
Despite being mostly panned by critics, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is a game that has more than earned its rightful place as a cult classic action RPG. This is a Team Ninja game through and through, and will make fans of the Nioh franchise feel right at home. But it also happens to be a great twist on the mostly threadbare story of the original Final Fantasy, greatly expanding the lore of the first game in the legendary series and painting its events in a brand new context. Between completing the story and the massive amount of endgame content, there are hundreds of potential hours of gameplay (and some incredible combat) waiting for you in Stranger of Paradise, and it’s recommended to go ahead and grab the DLC, which just so happens to be on sale right now for $5.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 Digital Deluxe Edition
- Release Date — December 20, 2018
- Developer — Square Enix, Koei Tecmo Games, Omega Force
- Publisher — Square Enix
- Genre — RPG, Crafting, City-Builder
- Review Aggregate Score — 86% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $24.99 (Normally $49.99, 50% off)
The first Dragon Quest Builders was a great combination of lighthearted action RPG and sandbox crafting a la Minecraft, and Dragon Quest Builders 2 takes that same formula and refines it to near perfection. Anyone looking for a cozy blend of city-building and old-school hack-and-slash adventure will find plenty of that addictive mix in Dragon Quest Builders 2, and there are hundreds (if not thousands) of potential hours of gameplay in store for anyone who picks it up between its story mode, endgame, and co-op. There’s even a lengthy demo available for Dragon Quest Builders 2 that lets you get several hours into its main quest to experience all the different gameplay systems on offer, and it’s absolutely worth picking up if that slice of gameplay piques your interest.
Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection Deluxe Edition
- Release Date — June 9, 2021
- Developer — Team Ninja
- Publisher — Koei Tecmo
- Genre — Action
- Review Aggregate Score — 73% (Mixed or Average)
- Price — $24.99 (Normally $49.99, 50% off)
With the recent release of Ninja Gaiden 4 and this year’s summertime drop of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, the Ninja Gaiden franchise is back and better than ever, which makes now a perfect time to go back and play through the series’ past entries. The Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection brings together the two Ninja Gaiden Sigma games (the PS3 ports of Ninja Gaiden Black for Xbox and Ninja Gaiden II for Xbox 360), along with Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, getting you caught up on the series’ 3D era ahead of the events of Ninja Gaiden 4. While Ninja Gaiden 3 is a bit of a disappointment, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 are phenomenal action games that belong in the library of any genre fan. Just be forewarned that all three games in the Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection will push your skills to the limit.
Assassin’s Creed Mythology Pack
- Release Date — October 27, 2017 (Assassin’s Creed Origins); October 5, 2018 (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey); November 10, 2020 (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla)
- Developer — Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Quebec
- Publisher — Ubisoft
- Genre — Action-Adventure, Stealth
- Review Aggregate Score — 81% (Origins); 83% (Odyssey); 80% (Valhalla)
- Price — $31.99 (Normally $159.99, 80% off)
There are a ton of great deals for Ubisoft games on the PlayStation Store right now, but the best of them all is the Assassin’s Creed Mythology Pack, which brings together the “modern” Assassin’s Creed titles: Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. All three of these newer Assassin’s Creed games are great in their own right, and each contains anywhere from one to two hundred hours of gameplay, depending on how much side content you choose to engage with. In addition to their solid open-world action-adventure gameplay, these three Assassin’s Creed titles feature some of the series’ best historical tourism, allowing players to virtually visit ancient Egypt, Greece, and northern Europe like no other game before or since. To get all three of these titles for just $32 is an absolute steal.
Dead Space Digital Deluxe Edition
- Release Date — January 27, 2023
- Developer — Motive Studio
- Publisher — Electronic Arts
- Genre — Survival Horror
- Review Aggregate Score — 89% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $15.99 (Normally $79.99, 80% off)
The Dead Space remake is a curious case of how remakes don’t always need to rock the boat. While the modern Resident Evil remakes straddle the line between nostalgic homage and toying with players’ perception, Dead Space plays it close to the chest by keeping the core gameplay loop and story almost 100% intact from the original. The biggest differences come through in how Dead Space looks and sounds, but its rock-solid survival horror gameplay remains as great as it’s always been. Despite some strong critical and commercial reception, EA canceled plans for a Dead Space 2 remake, meaning we’ll never get to see how Motive would have improved that equally as spectacular entry in the short-lived franchise. At least you can grab the first Dead Space remake for just $16 right now.
Persona 5 Royal
- Release Date — October 31, 2019
- Developer — Atlus, P-Studio
- Publisher — Sega
- Genre — JRPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 95% (Universal Acclaim)
- Price — $20.99 (Normally $59.99, 65% off)
In the wake of its release, sentiment among many outlets is that Persona 5 Royal is perhaps the greatest JRPG ever made. And while I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that statement, it’s undoubtedly true that it’s at least one of the greatest JRPGs ever made. The Persona series’ shift that came about in Persona 3 (courtesy of Katsura Hashino’s new vision for the franchise) reached its peak in Persona 5, which also happened to be the series’ breakout moment in the West. Releasing a “definitive” extended edition of Persona 5 was practically a guarantee, given that Atlus had done the same for Persona 3 and 4, and Persona 5 Royal did not disappoint as the best version of one of the series’ (and the genre’s) best games. If you’ve somehow avoided it until now, please do yourself a favor and grab Persona 5 Royal while it’s 65% off.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
- Release Date — October 5, 2016
- Developer — Infinity Ward, Raven Software
- Publisher — Activision
- Genre — FPS
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $19.99 (Normally $39.99, 50% off)
Speaking of best games in their respective genres, it’s almost impossible to overstate the importance that 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had on the modern FPS genre, and its 10th anniversary remaster went to great lengths to showcase both how well the game had aged and how forward-thinking it was for its time. Not too shabby for something that was thrown in as a freebie with purchases of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. With almost the entire Call of Duty franchise on sale right now on the PlayStation Store, you’ve got your pick of fast-paced military shooters to choose from, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is arguably the best one to pick up if you’re just looking for a timeless, action-packed FPS campaign that ranks as one of the best in the genre.
Sniper Elite: Resistance
- Release Date — January 30, 2025
- Developer — Rebellion Developments
- Publisher — Rebellion Developments
- Genre — Action, Stealth
- Review Aggregate Score — 75% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $35.99 (Normally $59.99, 40% off)
While you could point to most of the games in the Sniper Elite franchise simply being “more of the same”, the fact of the matter is that “more of the same” isn’t a bad thing when you’re operating with such a great gameplay formula. Rebellion’s stealth-action sandbox World War II shooter came back earlier this year with a side story that ran concurrently to the events of Sniper Elite 5, with Sniper Elite: Resistance allowing players to visit some new areas and flex their stealth muscles a bit more than previous entries in the franchise. Yes, the core gameplay loop still involves shooting Nazi soldiers in outrageously violent ways (emphasized further by the series’ signature “Killcam”), but it’s also still as fun as it’s always been.
Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition
- Release Date — September 26, 2017
- Developer — Bethesda Game Studios
- Publisher — Bethesda Softworks
- Genre — Action RPG, FPS
- Review Aggregate Score — 87% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $9.99 (Normally $39.99, 75% off)
It’s almost hard to believe that we just recently celebrated 10 years of Fallout 4, especially with Fallout 5 nowhere on the horizon. To its credit, though, Fallout 4 still feels just as relevant today as it did back in 2015, which is only further enhanced by the title’s next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. You can currently grab the Game of the Year Edition of Fallout 4 for just $10, which includes a free upgrade to the PS5 version, granting you access to one of the best post-apocalyptic RPGs ever made and a great game to play to get in the mood for the fast-approaching second season of the excellent Fallout television series. And hey — if Fallout isn’t your thing, you can grab the special edition of Bethesda’s Skyrim for the same price.
No Man’s Sky
- Release Date — November 12, 2020
- Developer — Hello Games
- Publisher — Hello Games
- Genre — Action-Adventure, Survival
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $23.99 (Normally $59.99, 60% off)
The promise of Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky seemed almost too good to be true before it launched. Sure enough, the game arrived in a state that made it seem like many of its more ambitious aspects were all hype and no payoff. But Hello Games persisted, delivering one major free content update after the next, and No Man’s Sky today is arguably better than those initial trailers made it seem. As far as immersive open-world experiences go, No Man’s Sky is easily one of the best, and the sheer amount of content on offer and things to do means you’ll likely find plenty of reasons to stick around for dozens or hundreds of hours; more than enough to justify its current sale price of just $24.
Horizon Forbidden West
- Release Date — February 18, 2022
- Developer — Guerrilla Games
- Publisher — Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Genre — Action-Adventure
- Review Aggregate Score — 88% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $29.99 (Normally $49.99, 40% off)
Of all the first-party Sony franchises, the Horizon games tend to go on sale at a much rarer frequency than other IP in the company’s catalog, which makes the current major discount on Horizon Forbidden West all the more special. This sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn is bigger and better in just about every way, with a revamped and expanded combat sandbox, more organically integrated open world elements, and an all-around better story that further fleshes out the interesting sci-fi world that Guerrilla Games has created. If you’ve held off on buying the sequel until now, you’re unlikely to ever see it get lower than its current $30 sale price.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Gold Edition
- Release Date — February 4, 2025
- Developer — Warhorse Studios
- Publisher — Deep Silver
- Genre — Action RPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 88% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $53.99 (Normally $89.99, 40% off)
This isn’t the first time that Kingdom Come: Deliverance II has gone on sale, but in case you missed it the last go-around, this incredible 2025 RPG is back down to its historical low of just $54 for the Gold Edition that includes a Season Pass, granting access to all the post-launch DLC. Stepping back into the shoes of Henry of Skalitz is made even more enjoyable in this follow-up thanks to how much better of a game it is than its predecessor. Nearly every aspect of gameplay has been improved, and the open-world sandbox created by Warhorse Studios is one of the most realistic and immersive medieval settings in interactive media. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a surefire Game of the Year contender in 2025, so if you haven’t played it yet, now is the time before the year draws to a close.
