Every Video Game-Themed Magic: The Gathering Set and Secret Lair Drop

When it comes to Magic: The Gathering‘s different IP crossovers throughout the years, the world of video games has been well-represented across both the game’s Universes Beyond sets and its collectible Secret Lair drops. Most recently, Wizards of the Coast launched the first Standard Legal Universes Beyond set in the line’s history with the monumental drop of Final Fantasy, only to quickly follow it up with a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed Secret Lair drop just a few weeks later. The Universes Beyond line and Secret Lair drops typically contain both new cards and reprints of staples in popular formats like Commander, making them a great entry point to the hobby for new players, thanks to their crossovers with popular video game franchises.

The Secret Lair series for Magic: The Gathering kicked off in 2020 with The Walking Dead, but it wouldn’t be until two years later in 2022 that we’d get our first video game crossover courtesy of the Street Fighter Secret Lair drop. Most of the cards in the set are Street Fighter-themed reprints of popular cards from the then-new Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set, meaning they are no longer viable in Standard since the set’s rotation in 2024. However, all of these cards are still playable in Commander, and even the most valuable card in the line (Chun Li) is less than $20.

On the whole, longtime Magic: The Gathering players seemed to be a little unhappy about Fortnite crossing over into the hobby thanks to its place as a sort of “meme” game with no real congruence to the rest of the wider Magic universe. Still, there’s no denying that the Secret Lair drop for Fortnite helped introduce several new players to the game, regardless of how players felt about the cards themselves. The most valuable card in the drop is Battle Royale, which is a reprint of New Phyrexia’s Triumph of the Hordes sorcery.

Prior to the first Universes Beyond set to tie in with a video game IP, players would get one of the best Secret Lair drops yet with Tomb Raider. Lara Croft herself is an excellent Commander that still maintains a good bit of value (close to $50 as of the time of writing), but it’s the Tomb Raider-themed reprint of Shadowspear (renamed “Totec’s Spear”) that takes the cake as the set’s most desirable card. Shadowspear is a great staple for any equipment/Voltron deck, and the Tomb Raider version just looks incredibly cool.

Unsurprisingly, the release of the Fallout Universes Beyond set and Secret Lair drops was perfectly timed by Wizards of the Coast to coincide with the airing of Amazon’s excellent Fallout television series, making it a huge hit among Magic: The Gathering die-hards and new players alike. There are some really great new cards across the Fallout set (including some surprisingly good Commanders that can fit into a wide variety of deck strategies), but it’s the set’s Fallout-specific reprint of Sol Ring that still reigns as the most valuable card (excluding the serialized ones, that is).

After the success of the Fallout set and the surprising number of high-value cards contained therein, pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed were fairly strong, only for the set to land with a “thud” when it finally arrived. Some reprints within the Assassin’s Creed set have been able to retain solid value since the set’s release, but most of the mechanically unique, new cards are worth a fraction of what they were during the pre-order window. Part of the blame rests on Assassin’s Creed not really fitting in with the rest of the Magic universe, while part can be attributed to the set’s premium pricing for not much utility.

The prices of cards in the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set are continuing to normalize in the weeks since its release, but there are still a surprising amount of cards worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Not only is Final Fantasy the most successful Universes Beyond set in Magic: The Gathering (even beating out Lord of the Rings), it’s also the first set in the UB line to be Standard Legal, meaning it’ll be an official part of the game for three years and receive regular reprints from Wizards of the Coast during that time. It helps that Final Fantasy makes sense within the context of a Magic set more than other video games.

The most recent video game Secret Lair drop is the one for Sonic the Hedgehog, which predictably sold out in a relatively short amount of time when pre-orders went live on July 14, 2025. There are some reprints as part of this set, but the Friends & Foes pack contains all-new, unique cards that could see some serious play in Commander once they officially release and players get them into their hands.
