The Best Deals to Grab on the Nintendo eShop This Week
Along with a few other publisher-specific sales, the Blockbuster Sale just kicked off over at the Nintendo eShop, and there are a ton of great deals to grab on some of the best indie, AA, and AAA games available for the Switch. From now until September 11, players have hundreds of different titles available that are either back down to their historically low prices or at a brand-new all-time-low discount as part of the sale, making it a great time to be in the market for a new Switch game. There are hundreds of deals available, but the following ones are some we’d pick as unmissable if you don’t happen to already have them in your library.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Bundle
- Release Date — November 11, 2021 (KOTOR); June 8, 2022 (KOTOR II)
- Developer — BioWare, Obsidian Entertainment
- Publisher — LucasArts, Xbox Game Studios
- Genre — RPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (KOTOR); 76% (KOTOR II)
- Price — $8.99 (Normally $29.99, 70% off)
Both of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games are on sale individually over at the Nintendo eShop, but the better deal is the bundle that includes both of them. For just $9, you can pick up the Knights of the Old Republic Bundle that includes the BioWare original and Obsidian Entertainment’s excellent (and underrated) sequel, giving you hundreds of hours of excellent RPG gameplay set in one of the best eras of the Star Wars universe. To this day, both KOTOR and KOTOR II are still two of the best Star Wars games ever made.
Bleak Sword DX
- Release Date — June 8, 2023
- Developer — more8bit
- Publisher — Devolver Digital
- Genre — Action RPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 77% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $2.99 (Normally $9.99, 70% off)
Originally an iOS-exclusive title via Apple Arcade, Bleak Sword DX made its way to PC and Switch in 2023, and it’s an incredibly atmospheric and challenging action RPG that utilizes a unique art style. Best thought of as “Dark Souls inside of a cardboard diorama”, Bleak Sword DX straddles the line between being a more traditional hack-and-slash action RPG and a Soulslike, but its dark fantasy aesthetic and incredible soundtrack give it a sense of style that sees it rival the best games by FromSoftware. You can finish Bleak Sword in just a handful of hours if you play your cards right, which makes its current $3 asking price seem totally fair.
Red Dead Redemption
- Release Date — August 17, 2023
- Developer — Rockstar San Diego
- Publisher — Rockstar Games
- Genre — Action-Adventure
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $29.99 (Normally $49.99, 40% off)
After the abysmal ports of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy to the Nintendo Switch, hopes weren’t high for Rockstar’s re-release of Red Dead Redemption. Thankfully, there was a lot more care put into porting Red Dead Redemption over to Nintendo’s hybrid console, resulting in an excellent version of the game that you can take on the go. While it might not be worth it to pick up Red Dead Redemption at full price (considering it’s a 15-year-old game at this point), it’s definitely justified at its current 40% discount.
Moonlighter: Complete Edition
- Release Date — November 5, 2018
- Developer — Digital Sun
- Publisher — 11 bit studios
- Genre — Action-Adventure, Simulation, Roguelike
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $4.34 (Normally $28.99, 85% off)
Digital Sun’s Moonlighter is the exact kind of indie that was destined to thrive on the Switch, a fun and charming action RPG roguelike with simulation and management elements that’s perfect in quick bursts. The two halves of Moonlighter‘s gameplay — venturing into dungeons to collect treasure in its action RPG half, then taking those spoils back to town to sell them in your item shop as part of the game’s simulation/management half — merge perfectly to form one of the best and most addictive indie games on Switch, and it’s the perfect time to grab it at its lowest-ever price before the sequel arrives later this year.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap
- Release Date — April 18, 2017
- Developer — Lizardcube
- Publisher — Dotemu
- Genre — Metroidvania
- Review Aggregate Score — 79% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $4.99 (Normally $19.99, 75% off)
Before the studio would assist on the development of Streets of Rage 4 or churn out one of this year’s best games with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, Lizardcube took a crack at remaking one of the best games in the Wonder Boy series with Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. A gorgeous, hand-drawn reimagining of Wonder Boy III, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is an absolute blast and a fantastic Metroidvania game that deserves a spot in any genre fan’s library. Especially so at the current $5 asking price, its best-ever discount on the Nintendo eShop.
Nine Sols
- Release Date — November 26, 2024
- Developer — Red Candle Games
- Publisher — Red Candle Games
- Genre — Metroidvania, Soulslike
- Review Aggregate Score — 84% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $17.99 (Normally $29.99, 40% off)
Speaking of great Metroidvanias, Nine Sols is one of the very few games to either match or outright beat the level of quality of Hollow Knight to become an instant classic in the genre, and its Switch version is down to its lowest-ever price of just $17.99 as part of the Blockbuster Sale. This discount is a bit lower than the game has ever gone on other platforms or digital storefronts, and the Switch version of the game has been improved since launch to make it more comparable to how the game performs on other hardware. As of right now, Nine Sols is one of the best Metroidvanias you can get on the Switch for less than $20.
The Messenger
- Release Date — August 30, 2018
- Developer — Sabotage Studio
- Publisher — Devolver Digital
- Genre — Action Platformer
- Review Aggregate Score — 86% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $3.99 (Normally $19.99, 80% off)
For a more traditional action platformer that also happens to be one of the best indies of the last few years, look no further than The Messenger, which is currently a whopping 80% off and down to just $3.99. Sabotage Studio’s loving homage to Ninja Gaiden, Metroid, and a slew of other beloved retro classics is packed with humor, heart, and pitch-perfect action platformer gameplay, making it a title that you’re not going to want to put down once you start, and certainly not without a giant smile on your face.
South Park: The Stick of Truth
- Release Date — September 25, 2018
- Developer — Obsidian Entertainment
- Publisher — Ubisoft
- Genre — RPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 82% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $5.99 (Normally $29.99, 80% off)
The legacy of South Park games was one of mostly terrible licensed tie-ins, until series creators and showrunners Matt Stone and Trey Parker took a more hands-on approach and worked with a talented development studio to deliver something that matched the quality of the show. That game was none other than South Park: The Stick of Truth, which is both a loving tribute to the history of South Park and a phenomenal old-school RPG. The Switch version runs flawlessly and is down to just $6 right now.
Unicorn Overlord
- Release Date — March 8, 2024
- Developer — Vanillaware, Atlus
- Publisher — Sega
- Genre — TRPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 89% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $23.99 (Normally $59.99, 60% off)
Despite being praised as one of the year’s best games, it still feels like not nearly enough people have played Unicorn Overlord, which likely has to do with its place as a game in a fairly niche genre: the TRPG. Regardless, Unicorn Overlord takes a bunch of ideas from some of the TRPG genre’s best games and successfully merges them into a coherent and addictive gameplay loop that’s tied together and presented in Vanillaware’s trademark gorgeous artwork. Right now, you can grab Unicorn Overlord for its lowest-ever price of just $24, making it the perfect time to take the plunge on the game if you’ve been on the fence.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
- Release Date — October 20, 2022
- Developer — Ubisoft Milan, Ubisoft Paris
- Publisher — Ubisoft
- Genre — TRPG
- Review Aggregate Score — 85% (Generally Favorable)
- Price — $9.99 (Normally $59.99, 83% off)
Another great TRPG that’s seemingly criminally underrated is Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, which, like its predecessor, was likely written off because of its kid-friendly demeanor. Don’t let the fact that it’s a Mario game or the presence of the weird (and annoying) Rabbids fool you, though — Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is one of the best TRPGs of the last few years and even better than the already excellent Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Sparks of Hope has gone on sale plenty of times before, but the current deal over at the Nintendo eShop sees it down to its lowest-ever price of just $10.
