The Best Games to Grab During the PlayStation Indies Sale

The Best Games to Grab During the PlayStation Indies Sale

Until September 3, players have a slew of excellent deals to grab over at the PlayStation Store courtesy of the ongoing PlayStation Indies Sale. As the name implies, the PlayStation Indies Sale highlights some of the best games from smaller developers operating outside the traditional publisher system, with many of the heavily discounted titles being some of the more critically acclaimed games of the last few years. The indie game development space remains one of the most creative and exciting in the gaming industry, and we strongly recommend adding any of these titles to your PS4 or PS5 library during this week’s PlayStation Indies Sale.

Chained Echoes

  • Release Date — December 8, 2022
  • Developer — Matthias Linda
  • Publisher — Deck 13 Spotlight
  • Genre — JRPG
  • Review Aggregate Score — 87% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $19.99 (Normally $24.99, 20% off)

There are actually two great indie JRPGs to check out as part of the PlayStation Indies Sale, with the first being 2022’s Chained Echoes. Similar in spirit and atmosphere to games like Suikoden or Xenogears, Chained Echoes is an incredible RPG experience that has seemingly flown under most players’ radars but is hailed by fans as one of the best modern games in the genre. You can currently grab the base game for 20% off its normal asking price, adding extra incentive to go ahead and pick up its recent Ashes of Elrant DLC for just $10.

Monster Train 2

  • Release Date — May 21, 2025
  • Developer — Shiny Shoe
  • Publisher — Big Fan Games
  • Genre — Deckbuilder, Roguelike
  • Review Aggregate Score — 87% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $19.99 (Normally $24.99, 20% off)

The original Monster Train is one of the few roguelike deckbuilders of its time to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Slay the Spire, and its sequel might even surpass them both. Monster Train 2 is incredibly addictive and satisfying right out of the gate, nailing the within-run and meta-progression curves and making it nearly impossible to put down as the feeling of “just one more run” gives way to an hours-long session. This incredible sequel is on sale for the first time ever, making now as good a time as any to go ahead and add it to your library.

Rogue Legacy 2

  • Release Date — June 20, 2023
  • Developer — Cellar Door Games
  • Publisher — Cellar Door Games
  • Genre — Action Roguelike
  • Review Aggregate Score — 90% (Universal Acclaim)
  • Price — $12.49 (Normally $24.99, 50% off)

Speaking of incredible roguelikes, the near-perfect Rogue Legacy 2 is a whopping 50% right now as part of the PlayStation Indies Sale, bringing it down to just $12.49. For the unfamiliar, Rogue Legacy 2 (and its predecessor) are action roguelikes with Metroidvania elements where, upon death, you take up the mantle of your hero’s descendant, getting to choose from a pool of genetic traits that make you better suited to see the adventure through to its end. You could literally spend hundreds of hours with Rogue Legacy 2 and not see all it has to offer, and it would be time well spent.

Tails of Iron & Tails of Iron II Deluxe Bundle

  • Release Date — September 17, 2021 (Tails of Iron); January 28, 2025 (Tails of Iron II)
  • Developer — Odd Bug Studio
  • Publisher — United Label
  • Genre — Action RPG
  • Review Aggregate Score — 81% (Tails of Iron); 77% (Tails of Iron II)
  • Price — $20.99 (Normally $34.99, 40% off)

The Tails of Iron games are criminally underrated action RPGs/Soulslikes that feature an atypical setting, chunky combat, and some narration and storytelling that punch well above their weight. The first Tails of Iron might be a bit superior to the sequel, but you can currently grab a bundle with both games for just $21 — a massive discount on both games’ individual pricing. Fans of anthropomorphic animal-led fantasy like Redwall owe it to themselves to grab the Tails of Iron bundle while it’s on sale.

Firewatch

  • Release Date — February 9, 2016
  • Developer — Campo Santo
  • Publisher — Panic
  • Genre — Adventure
  • Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $4.99 (Normally $19.99, 75% off)

The classics, as they say, never go out of style, and Firewatch is what could best be described as a “modern classic”. One of the first “walking simulator”-style first-person adventure games, Firewatch is an emotional and meditative mystery that is hard to put down once it starts, and it’s currently just $5 over on the PlayStation Store. While the “walking simulator” genre isn’t for everyone, fans of games with a great story (and one that can be completed in just one or two sittings) will definitely get their money’s worth with Firewatch at its current sale price.

Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist

  • Release Date — January 22, 2025
  • Developer — Adglobe, Live Wire
  • Publisher — Binary Haze Interactive
  • Genre — Metroidvania
  • Review Aggregate Score — 84% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $16.24 (Normally $24.99, 35% off)

Even though the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong is just a week away, it’s still important to recognize the year’s other great Metroidvanias, of which Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist is undoubtedly one. This sequel to Ender Lilies takes everything that made that Soulslike/Metroidvania hybrid great and further refines it, delivering near-perfect gameplay and atmosphere and immediately cementing itself as one of the best modern Metroidvanias. Between now and September 4, Metroidvania fans owe it to themselves to check out and complete Ender Magnolia if they haven’t yet.

Still Wakes the Deep

  • Release Date — June 18, 2024
  • Developer — The Chinese Room
  • Publisher — Secret Mode
  • Genre — Horror, Adventure
  • Review Aggregate Score — 74% (Mixed or Average)
  • Price — $12.24 (Normally $34.99, 65% off)

The Chinese Room’s Still Wakes the Deep is an incredible first-person horror game that places a huge emphasis on atmosphere and perception, twisting the player’s ability to differentiate between what is and isn’t real as an eldritch horror takes hold of an offshore oil rig. It’s a shorter experience that can be completed in just a small handful of sittings (or one marathon session), which makes its current $12 asking price a lot more appealing than its normal $35 MSRP. As a bonus, Still Wakes the Deep‘s DLC expansion is also on sale, which players can grab as part of a discounted bundle.

Abiotic Factor

  • Release Date — July 22, 2025
  • Developer — Deep Field Games
  • Publisher — Playstack
  • Genre — Survival, Crafting
  • Review Aggregate Score — 88% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $27.99 (Normally $34.99, 20% off)

Abiotic Factor is one of those viral games that deserves its popularity, an excellent on-ramp to the survival and crafting genre that the developer has put an impressive amount of care and attention to detail in. Since its 1.0 launch, Abiotic Factor only continues to grow in popularity, and its current sale presents the perfect excuse to jump in and see what all the fuss is about — especially if you can get a few friends to take the plunge with you.

Sea of Stars

  • Release Date — August 29, 2023
  • Developer — Sabotage Studio
  • Publisher — Sabotage Studio
  • Genre — JRPG
  • Review Aggregate Score — 87% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $22.74 (Normally $34.99, 35% off)

To say that Sea of Stars is a game inspired by Chrono Trigger is an understatement, as it actually feels more like a spiritual successor. But to earn that kind of praise is no small feat considering Chrono Trigger is one of the best JRPGs ever made, and Sabotage Studio more than earns it with Sea of Stars. Everything about this game feels authentic to the era of JRPGs it’s a love letter to: from its incredible turn-based combat to its heartwarming story, incredible characters, and gorgeous pixel art visuals. Sea of Stars is worth grabbing at full price, so it’s a must-buy at its current 35% discount.

Nine Sols

  • Release Date — November 26, 2024
  • Developer — Red Candle Games
  • Publisher — Red Candle Games
  • Genre — Metroidvania, Soulslike
  • Review Aggregate Score — 84% (Generally Favorable)
  • Price — $20.99 (Normally $29.99, 30% off)

If there’s a modern Metroidvania that has threatened to take the crown from Hollow Knight as the genre’s new masterpiece, that game is Nine Sols. Essentially “2D Sekiro“, Nine Sols is a masterclass in game design. It has some of the greatest combat of any game in the Metroidvania genre, an impeccably designed world with richly engaging lore, a heart-wrenching story anchored by a compelling protagonist, and boss fights that would make FromSoftware proud. Nine Sols is about as close to a “perfect” Metroidvania as you’ll ever get, and it’s a must-play for anyone who has yet to experience it. Especially at its current $21 asking price.
