The Best Upcoming RPGs in 2026
We still have a few months left in 2025, but that hasn’t stopped players from already looking to what’s next in the world of gaming for 2026 and beyond. A large part of the excitement and speculation for the next year or more of game releases has already been fueled by the summer gaming showcases and major gaming events that have given players glimpses of what’s to come, a number of which are some exciting-looking upcoming RPGs set to arrive in 2026. This year has already been a banner year for the genre, especially when it comes to once-niche franchises finally breaking through to the mainstream, and it seems like next year will keep that momentum going with little dalliance.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon
- Release Date — January 15, 2026
- Developer — Nihon Falcom
- Publisher — NIS America
- Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2
Starting things off for the year is the latest localization in the Legend of Heroes series, with Trails Beyond the Horizon finally making its Western debut in a much shorter time than its Trails Through Daybreak II predecessor. The Legend of Heroes series is slowly but surely reaching its climactic end after decades of interconnected games, building toward what’s sure to be one of the most ambitious endings in the genre’s history. As such, Nihon Falcom has been working tirelessly to create parity between the series’ Eastern and Western release schedules. Trails Beyond the Horizon is a big step forward for the series that should set up the final arc in the storyline.
The Adventures of Eliott: The Millennium Tales
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Claytechworks
- Publisher — Square Enix
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S
The upcoming Adventures of Eliott is the latest collaboration between Square Enix and Bravely Default developer Claytechworks, but it’s quite different from the studio’s past works. Instead of a classically styled turn-based RPG, The Adventures of Eliott feels more like Square Enix and Claytechworks’ take on the classic Ys formula, with the game centered heavily around some very fun action RPG combat and exploration. After playing the demo for this one available on the Nintendo eShop, it’s a safe bet that this will be one of 2026’s best action RPGs.
The Blood of Dawnwalker
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Rebel Wolves
- Publisher — Bandai Namco
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
After working on both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 for CD Projekt RED, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz left the studio to form Rebel Wolves, and its debut game launches next year with The Blood of Dawnwalker. Fans of choice-driven RPGs with branching questlines and a heavy emphasis on player agency will find a lot to love about The Blood of Dawnwalker, which is reportedly in great shape ahead of release based on impressions from Gamescom. We don’t get too many vampire RPGs, so The Blood of Dawnwalker also happens to fit nicely into a relatively underutilized niche.
Disciples: Domination
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Artefacts Studio
- Publisher — Kalypso Media
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
The long-running Disciples series is getting a new entry at some point next year with Disciples: Domination, which is also making its way to both PlayStation and Xbox as a series first. For those unfamiliar, the Disciples games are CRPGs with tense and tactical grid-based combat that will feel familiar to anyone who’s a fan of Heroes of Might and Magic, and this newest entry appears to be picking up the series’ story 15 years after the events of the last game. This is yet another upcoming RPG that had a strong showing at this year’s Gamescom, so fingers crossed it ends up delivering an experience as good as it looks.
Entropy
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Lovely Hellplace
- Publisher — DreadXP
- Platforms — PC
Back in 2023, Lovely Hellplace released the excellent Dread Delusion into Early Access, with the game finally entering 1.0 in 2024 and freeing up the studio to work on a new game. That new. game is Entropy, and it’s already shaping up to be one of 2026’s most exciting RPGs. A turn-based tactical RPG with a PS1 visual aesthetic, Entropy carries over a lot of the same charm as Dread Delusion, but the change in combat from real-time to turn-based should help the title reach an audience hungry for something more old-school.
Fable
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Playground Games
- Publisher — Xbox Game Studios
- Platforms — PC, Xbox Series X/S
Despite mass layoffs and studio closures over at Microsoft’s gaming division, the upcoming Fable reboot is reportedly still on-track to release at some point in 2026, making it one of the Xbox’s premier exclusives for the year. Based on the trailers and gameplay snippets that have been shown off so far, players can lilely expect another high-fantasy adventure with plenty of humor and emphasis on emergent gameplay elements that arise from the player’s actions. The Fable reboot has been a long-time coming, and if it can deliver, it should end up being one of 2026’s best games.
Gothic Remake
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Alkimia Interactive
- Publisher — THQ Nordic
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
The cult-classic Gothic series is getting both a series of remasters of the first three games and a full-blown remake of the first title in the franchise, with Gothic Remake (or Gothic 1 Remake) launching at some point in 2026. These action RPGs are not for the faint of heart, but when you stick with them past their brutally difficult beginnings, they open up to become some of the most rewarding and addictive games in the genre. The original Gothic has long sat on many players’ lists of favorite games in the genre, and its remake could potentially see the title gain a whole new audience of players that appreciate its atypical approach to role-playing games.
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Capcom
- Publisher — Capcom
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S
The highly underrated Monster Hunter Stories series is getting a third entry in 2026, making its debut as part of a recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. The first two Monster Hunter Stories games were excellent turn-based RPGs with monster collecting elements that let you befriend the Monster Hunter series’ iconic beasts, and Monster Hunter Stories 3 seems to continue the greater emphasis on story that was present in Monster Hunter Stories 2. At the very least, it’ll be great to get a decent Pokemon alternative so soon after this year’s Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Solasta II
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Tactical Adventures
- Publisher — Tactical Adventures
- Platforms — PC
While we don’t know for sure that Solasta II will actually end up releasing in 2026, all signs point to Tactical Adventures eyeing a potential Early Access launch sometime next year. Having played the demo for Solasta II, it’s already obvioous that the game is in great shape and set to be yet another incredible RPG with deep combat, character customization, and branching questlines. The original Solasta is one of the few CRPGs that can stand toe-to-toe with the other modern greats of the genre like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Baldur’s Gate 3, so a proper sequel is long overdue.
Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta
- Release Date — TBA 2026
- Developer — Nihon Falcom
- Publisher — Xseed Games
- Platforms — Nintendo Switch
We don’t have an official release date yet, but Nihon Falcom and Marvelous are reportedly planning for a Q1 or Q2 launch for the next Ys remaster, with Ys Memoire: Revelation in Celceta potentially arriving in early 2026. The original Ys: Memories of Celceta was a modern remake of Ys IV, and Ys Memoire: Revelations of Celceta is a remake of it that should end up joining Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana as one of the Switch’s better action RPGs. End of the day, more Ys games available on more platforms is never a bad thing.
